How would one have gone from New York City to Flagstaff Arizona in 1940?

Commercial aviation wasn't popular before World War II. So flying would have been out of the question, and unless he flew his own plane. He most likely would have driven the Lincoln Highway from New York to where it met up with Route 66 and then continued west to Arizona.
