Canon Rebel XS or Nikon D3000?

I really can't choose between the two of those and I saw on Amazon that both of these are cheap. Hope someone can give me refined and detailed answer why I should buy one of these. PLEASE HELP! My mom's a pro photographer but she doesn't have experience with Digital SLR's. I'm a aspiring photographer so which one is the best for amateur photographer like me?
