Looking for safe areas to live in Houston, TX!!?

My young family and I are relocating to Houston, I will be working about 1-2 miles southeast of downtown and I am really concerned about finding a safe area to raise my family. I will probably be forced to buy a home as opposed to rent because of the fact that I have 3 large indoor dogs, which is OK. What are safe areas to buy a home? I really like Humble, but I am afraid that may be a congested commute. What areas do I need to avoid?
