How long after being sick with virus should you get the flu shot?

My son had the stomach flu he went to the dr..I ask dr the same question she said long has he not running high fever he could got flu shot thesame day he saw the dr but they have ran out of the flu shot it very limit now..He on waited list to get flu shot..there thousand people head of him on listed get shot first.
