How can I find a boyfriend without risking my dignity and self-esteem?

I'm 22 and have never had a boyfriend. All the other girls I know got jerked around, dumped, and pressured into or else their entire world ends up revolving around their useless boyfriends. I don't want to be put in a position where I would be so weak and pathetic. Most of the guys I know are promiscuous and drink too much. My mom's first and only boyfriend was my dad, whom she met when she was my age and they've been together ever since. How do I know when I meet a guy who won't screw me over?
